Two scouts, from the city of Pu Yang, walk through the eastern forest after receiving word that Xia Pi was under attack. The men clearly do not know the true dangers that lurk in this dark place as both tread upon twigs and branches with little regard for their own safety. The sound of the snapping echoes off of countless trees and birds take to flight thinking a possible predator was looking to make them a meal. There was no need for the birds to fear these two humans but instead for the humans to fear the only other apex hunters in the forest. They should have brought a few more soldiers!
"If the devils of the north are moving on Xia Pi, than surely we are next!" says one of the scouts while looking around for intruders.
As the two move deeper into the forest a noise can be heard up ahead. The noise comes from a small deer but currently the scouts are unaware and they begin to stalk; finally attempting to keep quiet. However, it was too late.
He Zi, hiding behind a nearby tree, waves to a few of his marines who quickly drop low to the ground. They too had seen the 'prize', dinner for some of the army, and there was no way the two from Pu Yang would scare it away.
The small group of soldiers under the Black Scorpion prepare to ambush as the scouts move into a small opening where the animal was feeding.
"Hey, look!"
"Shhhh..." the other replies, waving his hand to halt his stupid comrade from frightening the deer.
For He Zi, waiting in the shadows, there was a slight problem. First, the army needed to eat for it had been days since their last 'good' meal. Second, and possibly more important, was to not give away their presence in the forest. A skirmish with the defenders of Pu Yang was not a good idea with eager lords marching on both Xia Pi and Shou Chun.
"My lord, if we kill them then more will come to search..."
A captain, one of the few veterans in Zi's army, whispers thoughts to his leader about the current situation. Certainly they could wait for another animal to approach instead of starting a possible war with Pu Yang.
"Then they will die as well" is the response from He Zi as he sets an arrow to his bowstring.
Letting loose, the projectile races toward its target; the deer. It connects with the animal's throat and soon fresh blood begins to stain the earth below.
Both scouts become panicked and look around to find the hunter that had slain the deer but instead they find soldiers appearing everywhere.
"Throw down your weapons and live to see the sun rise again!"
A gleaming blade points toward the two, held tightly in He Zi's grasp, and shortly after the command weapons fall to the ground. The two scouts are tied up and their clothes removed to be used by Zi's troops to enter the city.
