Obtaining land in this game is done through conquest. If you don't already have land you will have to obtain it by petitioning the Zhao Empire to grant you some. If you do not acquire territory first by this process, and try to subjugate one of the Emperor's provinces for yourself instead, then the Emperor will think that you are a foreign faction launching an invasion, and he will do everything in his power to try and stop you. Needless to say, seeking to grab land by warring with the Zhao Empire will not be a good idea at first.
To ask the Zhao Emperor for land, you must obtain a following of at least four other officers (roleplayers) and their armies. The Emperor does not have any inclination to appoint people to high positions if those people are not talented, and what better way to show your skill than by coming to Luoyang with subordinates and an army that you raised? When in the Emperor's presence you must be respectful and kindly ask for territory. If the Emperor feels you are worthy, which he will usually feel since the current magistrates he has appointed throughout the land blatantly suck, he will gladly assign you a plot of land, which will be your capital for the game.
After this, you and your vassals' job is to try to unify all the other factions under your banner and unite the land. An exception is Luoyang, which will be difficult to conquer. If you try to seize Luoyang before then the Zhao can gain support from the corrupt landlords (gray on the political map) who rule the land, as well as possible a few of the player kingdoms. If you do by chance manage to take Luoyang, the Emperor may move the capital and set up a new military headquarters, as well as draft another large army to defend himself. In general though it will be foolish to assault the capital before a certain point in the game, however the Emperor himself will not do anything in Chronicles of Destiny except for defend himself, grant land and occassionally hold state councils or launch expeditions against foreign kingdoms. The task of unifying Ancient China lies in the hands of the players, the regional warlords and heroic officers who vie for control through civil war and diplomacy
